The Noble Kava Farm - Qamea Fiji
About Our Farm
Noel Douglas is a third generation Fijian farmer who began exporting kava in the late 1980’s to the United States. Today he has over 30 years of kava growing experience.
Our farm is located in the island of Qamea in northern Fiji, just off the coast of Taveuni. Around us, are two more islands: Matangi and Laucala. Apart from organically grown kava, we grow organic vegetables such as tomatoes, sweet potato, corn, cabbage, spinach. There are also papaya and banana trees, and wild coconuts.
Our farm has rolling green hills which are sheltered by native bush, facing the beautiful Fijian sea, and freshwater streams irrigate our crops. With the luxury of almost 200 acres (80 ha), our kava is planted in rich virgin organic soil, full of minerals and nutrients.
Our Kava
Our kava is organically grown, and weeded by hand. No chemicals, pesticides etc – ever.
Planted on rich organic virgin soil and bathed by lots of sunlight, our Kava matures and grows in an absolute undisturbed pristine environment.
Different from other kavas in Fiji, the Kava in Qamea island is renowned for its high concentration of kava lactones, giving our kava a strong, yet pleasant, distinct and smooth flavour.
We have over 20,000 plants at any given time, and farm in rich organic virgin soil. All our kava comes from our farms, and we don’t source it from third parties, which gives us complete control on quality and age.
About Us
The neighbouring Matangi Island is owned and run by the Douglas family (originally of Scottish and English descent) whose ancestors first arrived in 1878, purchased the Island and worked the land as a coconut plantation until 1986.
The Douglas family has owned Matangi island for five generations, starting with Frederick, who ventured into the sandalwood and cotton trade in the 1870s. He married a Fijian princess, Adi Matilda Marrama Ni Kai Viwa, blending the family with the local Fijian people.
Flora Douglas, whose great grandfather had purchased Matangi island in 1878, and her husband Noel Douglas began on their journey to develop Matangi into one of Fiji’s premier island resorts.
The descendants continue to own and care for the island and its resort. Christene Douglas – general manager of Matangi Island, and her team are responsible for the sublime hospitality experienced in the Adults Only Resort and Luxury Bures and Treehouses on Matangi Island. She attended school with the locals and went on to study Law. Her father, Noel was an early ecologist, caring for injured turtles and other sea life.
After purchasing land on the neighbouring island of Qamea, Noel Douglas is a third generation Fijian farmer who began exporting kava in the late 1980’s to the United States.
Farming in the tropics has its set backs as it did when tropical cyclone Yasa (category5) ripped through the Fijian Islands in December 2020. The fertility of the farm however has prevailed and 4 years later after extensive farming and years of ideal conditions the maturing plants are producing some of the best Kava yields Noel has witnessed.
